Keltoi Winery is an Irish-inspired, family-run winery on 40 waterfront acres just north of Joplin, Missouri — known for its cozy cottage tasting room, mile-long walking trail, and warm hospitality with an unmistakable Celtic twist. Owners Erv and LeeAnn Langan planted their first vines back in 1997, and today Keltoi pours a lineup of a dozen-plus wines, from the semi-sweet Irish Raindrops to a dry Norton made from Missouri’s own state grape. Wander far enough down the trail and you’ll find Maynooth, a small Celtic-themed grove named for the ancient Irish site — a fitting detour for a winery that wears its heritage on its sleeve.

Keltoi sits just outside the boundary of the Ozark Mountain AVA — the massive, 35-million-acre viticultural area covering parts of Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. The AVA line runs along Interstate 44 a few miles south of here, so while Keltoi isn’t officially within it, it’s about as close as a winery can get without crossing in.

History

Erv and LeeAnn Langan bought the original 43 acres north of the long-vanished town of Medoc back in 1997, spending that first year simply clearing forest for what would eventually become a picnic area. The first grapes — St. Vincent, a red French hybrid — went into the ground the following year on the hilly southeast side of the property, now known as the south vineyard. A few years later, the Langans expanded north with an additional three acres, and that’s where the winery itself now sits.

The winery building has a bit of a story of its own: an old barn once stood on that spot before its roof gave out under roughly 12 inches of snow. Rather than let the wood go to waste, LeeAnn salvaged the old oak and built the bar that’s still in use today. The current production building went up in 2003 to handle crushing, fermentation, and bottling, and The Cottage — now the tasting room and retail space, and a popular spot for weddings and other events — was added in 2006.

Today the south vineyard carries around four acres of mixed reds and whites (St. Vincent, Boco Noir, Villard Noir, Foch, Cayuga, Seyval, and Vidal), while the north vineyard holds nearly two acres of Norton — Missouri’s state grape, and Keltoi’s best-selling wine.

The property’s Celtic theme goes beyond the tasting room. Down the mile-long walking trail sits Maynooth, named for an ancient Irish site historically used for reflection and spirituality — home to a Fairy Circle, a Tree of Life, a replica of the megalithic Nine Ladies, and a spot known as the Leprechaun’s Throne overlooking it all. Nearby is Culdee, featuring a “Leacht” (an early Christian stone altar) and a mound dedicated to St. Columba.

As Erv likes to put it: “If I don’t sell the grapes, I’ll make wine. If I don’t sell the wine, I’ll drink it.”

Keltoi doesn’t ship or mail wine — everything is pickup-only at the tasting room, so any club they run is almost certainly a will-call/on-site model rather than a shipping club. We haven’t confirmed the details; ask during your visit and please let us know in a review below. Separately, we did spot a wine labeled “Keltoi Wines Irish Teardrops” in Firstleaf’s wine directory — this appears to be a licensed/contracted product rather than something shipped by Keltoi itself, so treat it as a separate offering rather than a way to get Keltoi’s actual tasting-room wines delivered.

Our Review

If you ever find yourself in Oronogo, MO and are looking to taste some of the best wines you’ll ever find in Missouri, then you gotta check out Keltoi Vineyard & Winery. This place has an Irish soul planted right in the middle of the Ozark countryside, and it’s unlike any other winery we’ve been to.

Keltoi sits on 40 beautiful acres just a few minutes north of Joplin, stretching all the way to the banks of the North Fork River. Erv and LeeAnn Langan started this whole thing back in 1997, and Erv likes to call it a “hobby that got out of hand” — the first grapes went into the ground in 1998, and today there are several acres of French hybrid and Norton vines adding to the view. The business has grown enough over the years that Erv brought on a full-time winemaker, Andrew Pennington, to help keep up with production.

The name Keltoi comes from the Gaelic word for Celtic, and that theme runs through everything here — right down to sitting near the historic town of Medoc, which was destroyed back in 1861 during the Civil War. The tasting room is a cozy cottage filled with Irish artifacts and vintage décor, with a wood-burning fireplace inside for the colder months and a covered, string-lit patio outside for warm evenings. It’s the kind of place where you sink into a couch, sip something like the Irish Raindrops or the Biddy Early, and just don’t want to leave.

And there’s a lot more to explore than just the tasting room. Keltoi has a mile-long walking trail leading to an area called Maynooth, named after an ancient site in Ireland, complete with a Fairy Circle, a Tree of Life, and a replica of the megalithic Nine Ladies. There are two lakes on the property, a fishing dock, a pecan grove, and plenty of quiet spots to post up with a picnic and a bottle of wine. Don’t leave without tracking down their Blarney Stone, either — it’s a fun little tradition they’ve built into the visit.

Keltoi has also grown into a genuine event destination. The Cottage — the winery’s original building — is now a private event space perfect for birthdays, showers, rehearsal dinners, and holiday parties, and there’s a separate venue called The Vine next door built specifically for weddings and larger celebrations, with both indoor and outdoor space and waterfront views. If you want to make a weekend of it, they even have an on-site Airbnb, “Off the Vine at Keltoi Winery” — a 4-bedroom, 3-bath house on the same 40 acres with its own hot tub and patio overlooking the water, currently sitting at a 4.94-star rating.

Feel free to bring your dog because they are pet friendly! Just keep him on a leash, of course. Be sure to ask Erv or LeeAnn to give you the full history of the winery when you visit — Erv is a natural storyteller, and it’s one of the best parts of the experience. I loved the place, and I think you will too.
