From the moment you turn into Folktale Winery & Vineyards, you know you’ve discovered something special. This stunning Carmel Valley estate isn’t just a winery—it’s a complete wine country destination that combines exceptional wines, beautiful gardens, farm-to-table dining, and an inviting atmosphere that makes you want to spend the entire day.
We visited Folktale on a sunny afternoon and were immediately struck by the property’s beauty. Manicured gardens, picnic areas, and expansive lawns create a welcoming environment that feels both elegant and relaxed. This is the kind of place where you can taste world-class wines while sitting under oak trees, enjoying live music, and soaking in the Carmel Valley sunshine.
The Folktale Story
Every great bottle of wine holds a story, and Folktale’s story is particularly compelling. The property was originally founded in 1982 as Chateau Julien Wine Estate by Bob and Patti Brower, inspired by their travels through France’s Bordeaux region. Their dream was to bring that authentic wine country experience and hospitality to Carmel Valley.
In 2015, local winemaker Gregory Ahn acquired the property and reimagined it as Folktale Winery & Vineyards. The name reflects the thrill of discovery, the joy of gathering, and the belief that every great bottle of wine contains a unique story—filled with the character of place, a year of sun and rain, and the art and craft of winemaking.
As Folktale’s philosophy states: “This is a love story, and the best love stories never end.” After experiencing the property firsthand with my family, I can attest to that romantic spirit infusing every aspect of the winery.
Why We Love Folktale Winery & Vineyards
Commitment to Sustainability
What immediately impressed us about Folktale is their genuine commitment to sustainability. As they describe it, they’re “hyper-focused on sustainability and the responsibility to be stewards of this land.” They recognize they’re temporary tenants of this sacred place and work diligently to soften their footprint while crafting award-winning wines.
This isn’t greenwashing—you can see and feel the sustainable practices throughout the 15-acre estate. From the organic farming methods in their vineyards to their careful stewardship of the Carmel River location, Folktale demonstrates that world-class winemaking and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.
The Complete Wine Country Experience
What sets Folktale apart from other Carmel Valley wineries is the completeness of the experience. This isn’t just a tasting room—it’s a destination where families like ours can easily spend 2-4 hours enjoying everything they offer:
- 15 Acres of Beauty: Sustainably-farmed vineyards and gardens along the Carmel River create an idyllic setting
- Folktale Kitchen: On-site restaurant serving farm-to-table cuisine paired with estate wines
- Expansive Grounds: Beautiful lawns, gardens, and outdoor spaces perfect for relaxing and enjoying wine country
- Live Music: Regular concerts and events throughout the year
- Event Spaces: Stunning venue for weddings and private events, including a 10,000 sq. ft. barrel hall
- Family & Dog-Friendly: Truly welcoming atmosphere for the whole family including four-legged friends
- Multiple Seating Areas: Indoor tasting room and outdoor patio options
Exceptional Service & Hospitality
The Folktale staff exemplifies Carmel Valley’s warm hospitality—a tradition dating back to the property’s founding vision of bringing Bordeaux-style hospitality to California. Our wine educator was knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely passionate about the wines and the region. They took time to understand our preferences, shared stories about the winemaking process and Folktale’s transformation, and made recommendations that perfectly matched our tastes.
What I especially appreciated was how welcoming they were to my teenagers. They made our whole family feel valued and engaged everyone in the experience—a crucial distinction when visiting wineries with young adults.
The Tasting Experience
Folktale offers four carefully curated tasting flights, each designed to showcase different aspects of their winemaking. All tasting flights include 2 oz pours of each wine, and wine club members receive complimentary tastings as a membership benefit.

Note: The Custom Flight is not included as a complimentary option for wine club members, though members still receive their discount.
Our Tasting Experience
We selected the Signature Flight for our visit, which provided an excellent introduction to Folktale’s range. The 2 oz pours were generous enough to properly evaluate each wine, and the progression from sparkling rosé through Chardonnay, rosé, Pinot Noir, and finally the Joseph’s Blend made perfect sense.
The outdoor patio setting allowed our teenagers to enjoy the surroundings and beautiful gardens while we focused on the wines. Our wine educator was excellent at engaging all of us—explaining the wines to the adults while making our teens feel included in the experience.
The Wines
Folktale produces a diverse portfolio of wines under two brands: Folktale (their estate and flagship brand) and Le Mistral (their sister brand focusing on Monterey’s maritime-influenced single vineyards). Their winemaking philosophy emphasizes sustainable practices and showcasing the unique characteristics of each vineyard site.
Folktale Estate Wines
The Folktale brand features wines with imaginative, literary-inspired names that reflect their belief that every bottle tells a story:
Folktale Estate Chardonnay: Beautifully balanced with bright acidity, notes of green apple and citrus, and subtle oak influence. This cool-climate Chardonnay shows excellent restraint and food-friendliness—exactly what you want with Folktale Kitchen’s cuisine.
Folktale Reserve Chardonnay: Premium, limited-production Chardonnay with more complexity and depth than the estate bottling.
Folktale Estate Pinot Noir: Classic California Pinot character with red cherry, earth, and spice notes. Silky texture and bright acidity make this incredibly food-friendly.
Folktale Whole Cluster Pinot Noir: Special winemaking technique using whole grape clusters creates unique texture and flavor complexity.
Folktale Sparkling Rosé: Festive bubbles perfect for celebrations or starting a tasting.
Folktale Rosé: Refreshing still rosé with fresh strawberry and watermelon flavors and crisp finish—perfect for afternoon sipping in the gardens.
Folktale Cabernet Sauvignon: Demonstrates Carmel Valley’s warmer inland climate producing structured Cabernet with concentrated dark fruit.
Limited Production & Wine Club Exclusive Wines
Folktale creates special wines exclusively or primarily for wine club members, featuring evocative names:

The Le Mistral sister brand focuses on single-vineyard wines that exhibit Monterey’s maritime influence:
Le Mistral Chardonnay: Cool-climate Chardonnay shaped by coastal fog and breezes
Le Mistral The White Witch: Unique white wine with distinctive character
Le Mistral Joseph’s Blend: Signature red blend showcasing Monterey terroir
Le Mistral Syrah: Rhône varietal thriving in Monterey’s conditions
Le Mistral Cabernet Sauvignon: Monterey Cab with maritime influence creating unique expression
Wine Quality & Character
The wine quality consistently impressed us across both the Folktale and Le Mistral portfolios. These aren’t generic commercial wines—they’re thoughtfully crafted with attention to detail, sense of place, and creative storytelling that makes each wine memorable.
What distinguishes Folktale is the clarity of vision across their range. The estate wines showcase Carmel Valley’s warmer inland character, while Le Mistral demonstrates Monterey’s cooler, maritime-influenced sites. Together, they paint a complete picture of what Monterey County can achieve.
Price Points
Folktale’s wines are fairly priced for the quality, typically ranging from $30-60 per bottle with reserve and limited-production selections at higher price points. The value is excellent considering the estate vineyard sources, sustainable farming practices, and winemaking expertise.
Wine club members receive 15-25% discounts (depending on chapter level) plus 10% off food, making the value proposition even stronger for regular visitors or those who join the wine club.
Folktale Kitchen
The on-site restaurant deserves special mention. Folktale Kitchen serves farm-to-table cuisine featuring local ingredients and seasonal menus designed to pair beautifully with the wines. Whether you’re enjoying a full lunch, artisan cheese plates, or small bites with your tasting, the food quality matches the wine excellence.
We highly recommend planning a meal during your visit. The combination of great food, excellent wine, and the beautiful setting creates a memorable wine country dining experience. For families, having a restaurant on-site means everyone stays happy and fed—crucial for successful winery visits with teenagers!
