Looking for an exceptional winery experience near Silicon Valley? Our Byington Winery review reveals why this Los Gatos gem should be at the top of your list. In June 2025, three generations of the Monahan family visited Byington Vineyard & Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and what began as a professional evaluation transformed into an unforgettable family experience that perfectly showcased why Byington stands as one of Northern California’s premier wine destinations.
The Setting: A Mountain Paradise Near Silicon Valley
Nestled on 95 spectacular acres in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Byington Vineyard & Winery offers visitors a breathtaking escape just minutes from Silicon Valley. The moment you arrive at 21850 Bear Creek Road in Los Gatos, you’re greeted by expansive views of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Monterey Bay, and pristine Pinot Noir vineyards that stretch across the rolling hillsides.
The winery’s 18,000-square-foot villa creates an impressive architectural statement against the mountain backdrop. With redwood forests embracing the landscape and sweeping vistas in every direction, Byington provides a sensory experience that begins well before you taste your first wine. The recent addition of a patio concert area and mountain picnic deck has enhanced an already spectacular setting.
Byington’s Winemaking Philosophy: Sustainable Excellence
What sets Byington apart is their unwavering commitment to sustainable, organic practices combined with award-winning wine quality. Since their founding in 1987, Byington has focused on producing premium wines through biodynamic growing methods that respect both the land and the craft of winemaking.
In 2013, Los Altos Vineyards acquired Byington and made significant investments in the vineyard, wine production, and facilities. The result is an optimal wine experience enhanced by solar power production and improved amenities while maintaining the winery’s commitment to sustainability and quality.
The Vineyards: Estate Excellence
Byington’s wine portfolio draws from two exceptional estate vineyards:
Byington Estate (Santa Cruz Mountains):
- 8 acres of premium, award-winning Pinot Noir
- Santa Cruz Mountains AVA terroir
- Biodynamic farming practices
- Unique microclimate ideal for Pinot Noir
Tin Cross Vineyards (Alexander Valley):
- 36 acres of ultra-premium varietals
- Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot
- Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak AVA
- Acquired in 2014 to strengthen sustainability commitment
Additionally, Byington selectively sources grapes from exclusive vineyards to expand their portfolio, ensuring an impressive array of wines that showcase Northern California’s diversity.
Meet the Winemaker: Daniel Negueruela
At the helm of Byington’s winemaking is Daniel Negueruela, whose journey from the village of Lardero in Rioja, Spain, brings Old World tradition to California innovation. Learning the art of winemaking in his grandfather’s basement among aged Tempranillo vines, Daniel became the youngest member ever inducted into the prestigious Denominacion de Origen Calificada Rioja board.
In 2020, Daniel and his wife relocated to the United States, where he joined Byington Winery and quickly ascended to head winemaker. His passion for crafting exceptional wines rooted in tradition while embracing sustainable practices perfectly aligns with Byington’s philosophy.
Byington Winery Wine Cave Tour: A Hidden Gem
One of the highlights of our Byington Vineyard visit was exploring their wine cave, where thousands of bottles age in optimal conditions. While not part of every standard tasting, the wine cave tour (available Saturdays by reservation at $35 per person) offers an exceptional behind-the-scenes experience that demonstrates the personal touch setting Byington apart from other Santa Cruz Mountains wineries.
Walking through the cave, surrounded by carefully organized wine inventory and learning about the aging process from our knowledgeable guide, provided my daughter with an invaluable education in winemaking. The cave maintains perfect temperature and humidity conditions, creating an atmosphere that speaks to Byington’s serious commitment to wine quality.
The approximately 45-minute tour explores the inner workings of the vineyard, production facility, and wine cave while covering Byington’s history dating back to 1987 and the significance of the Santa Cruz Mountains American Viticultural Area (AVA). Our guide expertly explained the winemaking process, from grape selection to fermentation, highlighting Byington’s commitment to sustainability and biodynamic growing methods.
Byington Vineyard Wine Tasting: Premium Santa Cruz Mountains Wines
The wine tasting experience at Byington Winery exceeded our expectations. Seated overlooking the beautifully manicured lawns, vineyard, and Monterey Bay, we were hosted by one of their knowledgeable tasting room associates who guided us through five carefully selected 1-ounce pours showcasing the winery’s range and quality.
Wine Tasting Details:
- Cost: $25 per guest (complimentary for Wine Club Members + 3 guests)
- When: Friday, Saturday, Sunday (and select holidays)
- Includes: 5 one-ounce pours with detailed information about each wine
- Optional: Gourmet cheese and charcuterie boards available for purchase
- Party Size: Up to 8 guests
- Reservations: Highly recommended (limited walk-ins available)
We tasted wines from both their estate vineyards and carefully selected partnerships. The Pinot Noir from their 8-acre Byington Estate vineyard was particularly impressive, demonstrating the unique characteristics of Santa Cruz Mountains fruit. The Cabernet Sauvignon from their Tin Cross Vineyards in Alexander Valley showcased the winery’s commitment to sourcing from exceptional terroir.
The tasting room staff provided detailed information about each wine’s characteristics, production methods, and food pairing suggestions, making the experience both enjoyable and educational. Their wine portfolio includes award-winning Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and other exciting varietals that highlight Northern California’s diversity.
Three Generations, One Perfect Day
What made this Byington Vineyard visit truly special was watching three generations of our family connect through wine and shared experiences. My father, Ken, and my son, Mason, bonded over an enthusiastic game of bocce ball on the winery’s court, creating memories against the backdrop of the vineyards.
The bocce ball court is available by reservation (limited to one hour per group to allow multiple guests to enjoy), and it filled up quickly even on a regular visiting day. This amenity adds a playful, family-friendly dimension that many wineries lack.
My daughter’s fascination with the winemaking process was evident throughout our visit. From asking detailed questions during the cave tour to carefully observing the tasting process, she gained a genuine appreciation for the craftsmanship behind each bottle. This educational component makes Byington an excellent choice for families looking to share wine culture with younger generations—though as the winery notes, children must be seated with and supervised by parents at all times to maintain the adult wine tasting experience.
Amenities and Activities: Beyond Wine Tasting
Byington Winery offers significantly more than just wine tasting, making it an ideal destination for a full day of wine country exploration:
Hiking Trail & Block 4 Outlook
The 2.2-mile hiking trail at Byington starts at the tasting room double doors and offers unsurpassed views of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The trail descends at a moderate grade through mixed woodland and chaparral, looping back with a 365-foot elevation change. Hikers can complete the full loop in 45-90 minutes, or opt for a shorter route (see trail map on their website).
Trail Details:
- Hours: Noon to 5pm when open to public (Saturday, Sunday, select holidays)
- Pet-Friendly: Leashed dogs welcome
- Age Requirement: Guests under 18 must be accompanied by parent/guardian
- Highlight: Block 4 Outlook provides breathtaking panoramic views
Bocce Ball Court
The bocce ball court provided entertainment for our multi-generational group and is available by advance reservation. The court fills quickly, so booking ahead is essential. Reservations are limited to one hour per group.
Additional Features
- Patio Concert Area: Recently added venue for entertainment
- Mountain Picnic Deck: Scenic spot for enjoying the views

The winery’s commitment to providing a complete experience is evident in every detail, from sustainable practices to carefully maintained grounds that create a peaceful, luxurious atmosphere.
The Wine Selection: Quality Worth Taking Home
After our tasting experience, we purchased several bottles of our favorites. The quality-to-price ratio was impressive, and the wine club member discounts (ranging from 20% to 30% depending on tier) made it even more attractive. We selected bottles that represented the range of Byington’s portfolio, from their signature Pinot Noir to their robust Cabernet Sauvignon.
The staff provided excellent guidance on which wines would age well and which were ready for immediate enjoyment, helping us make informed decisions. The variety available—spanning their estate Pinot Noir and Alexander Valley Bordeaux varietals to selectively sourced wines from exclusive vineyards—ensures that every palate can find something to appreciate.
