Why Byington Earned Our 5-Star Recommendation
Located just 30 minutes from Silicon Valley along scenic Highway 17 in Los Gatos, Byington offers everything we love about California wine country: award-winning wines crafted through sustainable, organic practices, breathtaking mountain views, family-friendly amenities, and warm hospitality that welcomes everyone from serious wine collectors to families exploring wine country together.
During our recent visit with three generations of family, we experienced what makes Byington special—educational wine cave tours ($35), premium estate Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, a 2.2-mile hiking trail with panoramic vistas, and a wine club structure (Explorers, Collectors Red, and Diamond Clubs) that delivers genuine value with 20-30% member discounts.
What Sets Byington Apart
- Sustainable Winemaking: Biodynamic growing methods across estate vineyards in Santa Cruz Mountains and Alexander Valley
- Award-Winning Wines: Premium Pinot Noir (8 acres Santa Cruz Mountains) and Bordeaux varietals (36 acres Alexander Valley)
- Wine Cave Experience: Behind-the-scenes tours of their aging cave with thousands of bottles
- Spectacular Setting: 95 acres with views of Santa Cruz Mountains and Monterey Bay
- Family Activities: Bocce ball court, 2.2-mile hiking trail, Block 4 Outlook, and dog-friendly grounds
- Silicon Valley Proximity: Just 30 minutes from tech hub, perfect for weekend escapes
The Wines
Byington produces exceptional wines under the guidance of winemaker Daniel Negueruela, whose journey from Rioja, Spain brings Old World tradition to California innovation. Their portfolio showcases what the Santa Cruz Mountains and Alexander Valley can achieve—from elegant estate Pinot Noir to structured Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.
We were particularly impressed by their commitment to quality through sustainable practices and their wine club exclusive releases. Members get first access to new releases, collectible library wines (Diamond Club), and substantial discounts that make membership genuinely worthwhile.
Our Experience
We chose the Wine Tasting experience ($25) for our family visit, which included five one-ounce pours showcasing their range from estate Pinot Noir to Alexander Valley Cabernet. The outdoor setting overlooking vineyards and Monterey Bay was stunning, our tasting room associate was knowledgeable and engaging, and the experience exceeded our expectations.
The highlight? An impromptu wine cave tour that wasn’t part of our original booking. The staff’s generosity in sharing this behind-the-scenes experience demonstrated the personal touch that sets Byington apart. My daughter gained invaluable education about the winemaking process, my father and son bonded over bocce ball, and we all left with lasting memories and several bottles of our favorites.
